sf-sc-sf

alvin and i rode from daly city bart to santa cruz and back to colma bart to get some miles in. i am planning on doing the santa cruz 400k at the end of the month and needed to log some miles. this ride was great because it helped me figure out food/water intake and that even though mile 100 was awful, it got better the further we went.

i didnt get enough sleep and skipped dinner as well as breakfast before starting the ride. terrible idea, so we stopped at the taco bell in pacifica and i ate a bean burrito.

the surf looked super fun and i questioned why i was riding soo many miles instead of surfing today.

from there we rode the 1 south. just north of half moon bay, i see some randos at a store. we pull in to get some water and i realize its the 3cr 1200k riders! this was one of their controls. it was great to see some familiar SFR faces as well as santa cruz and seattle randonneurs jerseys.

many different bikes and lots of hi-viz!

we take off and soon would be passed by riders heading south and wave to riders coming north. it was great seeing so many randonneurs on the same road. at one point i catch up to eric, the first sfr i ever met. he is a beast and has done many long rides. his plan was to ride 700k without an overnight stop, all the way to slo. crazy!

we make some of our usual sf to sc stops, like pigeon point lighthouse. riding through davenport, someone in a sfr jacket is taking photos of riders making their way to santa cruz. i am mistaken for a 1200k rider again... i'm not quite at that distance yet!

once we get to santa cruz we meet my friend j at the surfboard factory he works at. after that, its off to new leaf for some burritos and coconut water. i grab some inari for the road.

the ride north up the 1 is brutal. the wind is killer. we make our way north and after pigeon point, it slows and by hmb it's pretty much gone.

there were times we wanted to cut the ride short and bail out, but we kept pushing. even in pacifica, we were ready to hit dennys and get a ride, but then we decide nope. the climb out of pacifica is not what you really want to do after all day on the bike, but we manage just fine. the 400k is looking less terrible now. if i ride in packs and at a faster pace, i may be able to get a nap in!
